Today, I am getting the opportunity to play in a tournament to work on the things I have been doing in practice. I recognize that a tournament is effectively another practice and has no real effect whether I do well or not. Therefore, I should measure whether I do well based on the effort I give in all aspects, and how committed I am to what I am working on in practice (extension on the backhand, trying to get to the net, etc.)
I can find comfort in the fact that my nervousness is not unique. Everyone feels it, and I even have a plan to deal with it. First, I will check my feet. The first thing that happens when I get nervous is that my feet stop moving. Then, I will make sure to keep positive body language. I will have my shoulders back, and my head held high.
I have an obligation to my parents and coaches to stay positive and energetic. Between the kids, parents, and coaches, there might be some drama. I will not let it bother me. I will stay focused and I will take time to go to my towel and reset if I need to.
My coaching voice will remind me that I can only focus on what I can control. Winning is out of my control. I am in control of how I see situations, and therefore in control of my emotions and reactions. I will find humor when I play. When I smile, I am in control.
